I grew up in this town. With globalization, very little of the wealth that was created during the industrial revolution hasn't moved elsewhere and the New York Times recently reported that 50% of the children born in central New York, move elsewhere, but My God! if it isn't beautiful in the summer.

The building with the billboard for Homer Hardware painted on it is the Barber Block. You can read a history of it here:

In the late 19th century, the 3rd floor was taken up by a theatre. If you ever get a chance to tour it, it's very beautiful--if your imagination is capable of restoring it to it's glory, that is.

There has been a resurgence of interest in historic preservation in Homer, I am happy to say. Main Street is looking better than ever and the Center for the Arts, in the former Baptist church on the village green, is almost finished restoring the many stained glass windows of the romanesque building. You can learn more about Homer history - including the theater/opera house at zazzle.com/thehistorichomershop, which raises funds for local not-for-profit organizations involved in the preservation of Homer's landmarks and history.

That's good news, Chazz. Homer is one of our favorite Upstate towns. We have not been there since I posted this 6 years ago. Meandering around Central NY, the Finger Lakes, and the Mohawk Valley is so pleasant - scenic and uncrowded, easy to get around.
